Sup all? Hip hop culture is all about adaption and apropriation ain't it?! In the same way Capoeira has done with moves old school masters incorporated oriental martial arts into the Capoeira systems. Dats what keeps Breaking and Hip Hop culture 'Fresh'! |

Which brings me to say hey Mungunza hope you are well bro and not going too Native in ol' blighty - thanks for the prompt. Just a couple of things for this Thread as I think the comparisons of the two forms are interesting... most people here have covered the bases - I would just sum up differences for me - If we compare Breaking (and more relevantly its earlier cousin 'Brooklyn Upprock' or 'Battlerock' which is a stylised ritual dance/fight ) with Capoeira you can see some shared elements - like the basic upright motions the Ginga and Toprock. In Ginga the body moves from a forward symmetrical position to step back into a cross lateral body position - in the Toprock it is opposite. Without writing a freaking essay I would propose that these two bases sum up a lot of what the different forms are about. Breaking has more emphasis on the 'attack' ( in a movement sense ) and a sharp, angular, forward propelling, self orientated display of prowess. While Capoeira values the stepback and feints with spiralling motions that don't so much stop and start but give rise to each other. Aany way I could probably go on about it all night - just that I think the quality of the movements and how they are used is interesting to discuss.... as I saw on a breakin Vid once - "ain't nobody the original Bboy we are all just manifesting shit at different times " |

Kia ora all Very interesting thread you got here. BBoys and bgirls take influance from everywhere and anything, other dance forms, mime, acting, circus, le pakour, stunts, gymnastics,contortionism, chinese opera, broadway and old musicals with the likes of fred astair and gene kelly to name a few. Pretty much as a bboy or bgirl you try to develop a style that you can call your own. Even though alot of the time you are copying or adapting something you have seen elsewhere. Capoeira really does'nt have that much influence on breakdancing as it is today. There are many different styles in bboying today such as Foundation or bronxstyle which emulates the style ofBreaking popular in the 80's. Circus or punk breakers are quite different from bronx style they use alott of contortionist type holds and spins and are usually not as worried about the beats in the song as they are melody and rhythm.Power heads are into amazing power moves such as airtracks, headspins and other moves of this sort. Also their are huge differences between styles of breaking across different countries. France are very funky dancers with character and flexaibility, Korea have amazing intermediate moves and often link one blowup to another amazing the crowds, Americans are usually obsest with the beats making sure to land each hit with attitude. I really dont think Capoeira has much influence on Breakdance these days.As it is down to the individual to adapt and copy elements from other forms that they believe will help them express themselves on the floor. Not every one in the scene takes influence from capoeira Most often it is ex capoeristas that put capoeira moves into their sets. I wonder if that makes any sense.
