Could someone please help me with this line, from "A manteiga derramou":

Valhe me deus e a nossa senhor

I don't understand Babel Fish's translation: Valhe me god and ours Sir

Errr, I'm not sure if this would help, and my Portuguese is crappy, anyway, ..... but if it's the "A manteiga derramou" song, I think the lyric went:

"Vou dizer a meu senhor" ... which means "I'm going to say to my master/boss" (hopefully I'm right).

Don't quote me on this, tho' :-)

But, come to think of it, there's a chance that maybe you're thinking of another song, Palha�o ?

The one that came to my mind directly, that sounded like the lyric that you're asking about, is actually Jogo de dentro, Jogo de fora ... the last bit of the song went:

"Valha me Deus, minha Nossa Senhora" which means "Protect me, My Lord, Our Lady"

Again, I could be wrong (that happens a lot!) so don't quote me on this, please :-)

Maybe I'm seeing things but, if you go to the resources pages, I'm sure that line appears in A Manteiga Derramou.

I'm confused because I've looked at about three different versions of the song and none, except the one on the resources page, has that line. Perhaps it's a misprint?

Which leads me to another question:

Where there are different versions of songs, which one(s) should I learn? I.e. The ones printed on our site, or can I learn ones from other sites? Does it matter?

That line is one of the many in capoeira songs that can get used in lots of different songs.

The meaning is reasonably general.

Just one the tranlation above. I was going to do my own translation, that was quite different from that one. The line is hard to translate (for me at least) since it uses both idiom and reflexive pronouns, two things that are really tricky.

I'd say the best way (unless there are some native speakers lurking on the forum) to get translations is to ask someone like Luciana in class.

It's good to look around and find lyrics to learn and use. But don't be limited by standard lines that are on our or any other site. Ideally what you're aiming for is to be able to use lines that you see are appropriate to the games or the mood of the roda. Part of that is getting a handle on the language itself.

Just a word on Babel... It's a good resource but it has limitations. At best it gives you a bit of an idea of what's being said. Occassionally it can be spot on but very rarely.

One note on learning songs is to remember that they do have meanings beyond what the translations convey.

Lots of songs are from Samba, Maculele, Maracatu and other forms that are related to Capoeira, additionally there are songs that are just Regional and just Angola, and songs that have very specific uses (Dona Alice for instance).

You can take as much or as little of that on board as you like, within reason. If you just like singing a particular song, then sing it, most of the time that will be fine. However, be aware that Mestres (particularly Angola Mestres) might think that you shouldn't sing certain songs in certain contexts.

My personal approach to singing songs is that when I am singing in what I consider to be an Angola roda, I won't sing a song if I am not certain that it is an Angola song.

But that's just me, and I'd say never take anything i do as an example.

They say that one of the reasons Mestre Waldemar was so notable is because, he was an intelligient observer and could articulate many things while singing in the roda like a singing, like commenting about the personality of someone in the roda, pass instructions to the players, his use of comedy among a whole bunch of observations some also say his could do this with his berimbau. Real sponteneity.

Of course there are others as well, I guess he started somewhere.

i had always wondered about the use of songs in a roda, like a game of song/words during the roda to help further the dialog between the people playing and watching.

like watching kaumatua talk on the paepae how they listen to prior speakers and add their own to what has been said,the use of words, what is going on around them at that time, form me i guess how this relates to my capoeira is finding the apropriete song for that person or persons, building the ax`e, where the dialog is at that point of time, maybe to crack a joke about yourself.
i mean would it be ok to stop during a game to sing then carry on playing or is this reserved for mestres? or would it depend on where you are at with the language and songs.
