Mestre Plinio

Mestre Plinio first started playing Capoeira in the street rodas where he lived in 1979, with people from his neighborhood.  After meeting with Mestre Moa do Katende, he was told he could start teaching classes.

In 1993 he met Mestre Jogo de Dentro and found his first students.  He finally found his own space in 1995, and the group Angoleiro Sim Sinho was born.  After 5 years of living and training with them he became a Contra-Mestre of Capoeira.

Mestre Plinio first visited NZ at our end of year event in 2008, and he brings with him amazing singing and knowledge of Capoeira musicology, as well as some very playful energy in the roda.

Mestre Roxinho

The school of Capoeira Angola Mato Rasteiro – ECAMAR – was founded by Mestre Roxinho, student and son of Mestre Virgilio, in 1999 in Salvador (BA) with the objective of promoting and preserving Capoeira Angola and the Afro-Brazilian culture.

In 2000, Mestre Roxinho arrived in the city of Lins (SP) and began introducing Capoeira Angola as well as initiating Project Bantu - a project with plans of social actions also involving other strands of the Afro Brazilian culture.  With the goal of bringing together people interested in Capoeira Angola, Mestre Roxinho inaugurated a space where various social and cultural activities could be run.

Today he is based at his academy in Sydney where he has established a good foundation for both his ECAMAR school and Project Bantu.  He first visited NZ in 2006, and has made regular trips since then.  He has very deep knowledge and respect for Capoeira Angola traditions.

Mestre Brabo

Mestre Brabo is our group’s own Capoeira Mestre.  He began Capoeira in 1984 in the USA with Mestre Marcelo Caveirinha.  He later returned to NZ and began teaching, founding our group in 1992.

Since 1992 the group has spread out of Auckland to centers around NZ including Wellington, Christchurch and Taranaki.  The group’s Capoeira has been heavily influenced by many Capoeira Angola Mestres, including Mestre Joao Grande, and are mainly mentored by Mestre Jogo de Dentro.

In 2007, Mestre Brabo was graduated to Mestre by Mestre Marcelo at the Easter Encounter, surrounded by both his own students and two of the students he began Capoeira with; Mestra Sorriso and Contra-Mestre Bengala.
